Portland Winter Light Festival

The cold weather didn’t seem to keep people away from the Portland Winter Light Festival.  That it wasn’t raining helped make it popular this Saturday night.  It was also the last night of the show.

We walked across the river with our friends Peter and Randy to OMSI, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry.  Peter on his electric cart was a lot faster than the rest of us.

The Festival is a wonderful combination of art and science , light was used as art and shadow, lack of light was also used creativity. in some of the pieces.

The artists that created the pieces were on hand to answer all manor of questions from curious onlookers like me. Their media ranged from light on glass airplanes – where refraction, shadows and reflections inter played on  the OMSI walls and on the glass.  An artist names Josh created  a huge matrices of LED networked together to display patterns and pictures using  LEDedit running on a computer inside a nearby van.

I had my Canon G15 with me. It’s advantage at night is it’s f/1.8 to f/2.8 lens. A large aperture good for low light shooting. It’s sensor size is a disadvantage though, at smaller than a 4/3  system it is fairly noisy at high ISO..  You will see quite a bit of noise in these pictures in spite of using Lightroom’s noise reduction features.  For size, the G15 can’t be beat, I can throw it into a coat pocket and not feel it’s weight.
